Skype uses P2P (peer-to-peer)
technology to connect you to other users - not to share files this time, but
to talk and chat with your friends. Skype, which is completely software-based,
takes up just over 10MB of hard drive space and so can live comfortably on
a tiny flash storage device. Anyone with a Skype-loaded flash storage unit
can plug it into a USB port and instantly turn that computer into a personal
Skype phone. Better sound quality than your regular phone.
Skype calls are secure and encrypted and the system is
both ad-free and spyware free. Skype calls -- through what the company calls
SkypeOut -- can now be made over any connection (broadband is not required,
but is preferred) from any internet-capable device to almost any landline
or mobile phone in about 170 countries at a tiny fraction of normal rates.
Facebook is a social networking
site where people form connections, both personal and professional. It was
originally developed for college and university use but has expanded to include
people from all walks of life. People can post status messages on their wall
about what they are doing or thinking, share photos and videos, and comment
on status messages or media of others in their network.
Twitter is a free social networking
and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages
known as tweets.
Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's
profile page and delivered to the author's subscribers who are known as followers.
Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default,
allow open access. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website.
